Improving the Quality of Forensic Evidence

Foster + Freeman donate equipment to Africa

Forensic science experts Foster + Freeman Ltd have donated document examination equipment to help train immigration officers in Africa.

Richard Evans, regional sales manager for the company based in Evesham, UK, gave a VSC4Plus and Eye-D unit to the African Capacity Building Center (ACBC) in Moshi, Tanzania. The ACBC is part of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and is used to train immigration officers within the African region.

The VSC4Plus can identify counterfeit documents in a matter of seconds. It can check for the majority of security features commonly used to prevent documents from being forged, such as watermarks, holograms, retro-reflective images, UV- activated features, anti-Stokes features, ICAO coded data, and invisibly embedded data.

Eye-D is designed to check standard security features of travel documents. It is a low cost system that can be deployed in large numbers to improve national and border security.

While he was in Tanzania Mr Evans demonstrated the equipment to a group of immigration officers from Kenya.

He said, “We were able to train the delegates on new techniques and introduce them to the standard of equipment that is now available. They were really impressed.”

The equipment will remain at the centre where it will continue to be used to update the skills of immigration officers in Africa.
