Fake Britain, a BBC documentary series providing consumer information about forgeries and fakes saw Foster + Freeman document examination systems take center stage when the last program of the series, Fake Identity aired on BBC One.
During the 45 minute show the UK Border agency were featured as they stop people with fake identities coming into the country.
It also showed customs and excise officers as they intercept counterfeit documents which arrive into Heathrow airport in the mail which are then used to create fake identities.
Among the items found was a Nigerian passport, smuggled into the UK inside a magazine.
The passport was sent to the high security National Document Fraud Unit - which has dealt with cases such as the Lockerbie bombing and the shoe bomber Richard Reid.
Using a VSC6000 the officer was quickly able to establish that the passport was fake.
The officer compared the questioned document and a genuine passport side by side using the Foster + Freeman equipment. She could easily see that the ink used to produce the picture on the suspect passport was different to that used on an original. She could also establish that ink used on lettering was not of the same quality or style.
A Nigerian male subsequently received a 20 week jail sentence for attempting to obtain a fake passport.
The program, which was originally aired in March this year and repeated in July, is available to view online via the BBC iPlayer until Monday 26th July 2010 (UK only).
